Restaurant Geeren, Zürich Switzerland

By roro - Posted on 02 August 2008

The Geeren restaurant on the backside of the Zürichberg (Mountain of Zürich - it is really just  a hill) has been a favorite of ours to return every time we are back in town  - not just once but several times on each visit. The Geeren features two old fashioned dining rooms (it is just old) that used to be eyeburning from smoke but now ok that smoking is banned in Switzerland and a large outside garden (Biergarten as my German friends would say).

Meringues are greatThe lovely location and garden however is really just half the reason why we are there  so often - it is really the Röschti! The Röschti is one of the main dishes in the Swiss-German cuisine, Americans know it under the name hash-browns. The Röscht comes with cheese, bacon, bacon and cheese, fried eggs, Bratwurst, or, like I had it on my visit with thinnly sliced veal and chanterelles in a cream sauce - just delicous.

The owner recently changed and with it some recipes - as my wife observed the cheese Röschti seems to be lacking Gruyere cheese as we tasted only the rather bland Emmentaler (Swiss Cheese), howvever the Meringue dessert is still outstannding and she did not share a bit not even the crumbs that fell on the table.
