Build a Sword

By roro - Posted on 02 June 2008

Finally my kids watched Narnja and immedately started to play the story in and around the house. However - a very important requisite was missing, the sword! So my wife suggested "Why don't you build with them some wooden swords - they would love it!".

Sure, we had some wood left over from our bow project (1x2x6) that would work nicely. The kids' request was for a "two-hander", so we sized the handle appropriately (9") and after cutting off two similar length pieces (7") for the guard used whatever was  left of the 1x2 for the blade (total  lenght  41"). We then cut out have the thickness of the 1x2 in the center of the two guard pieces and glued them on between the handle and the blade. After drying we shaped the blade, handle, and guards and the sword fighting began.

We had additional steps planned, such as painting the guard, covering the handle in leather - maybe on a future day - the swords were in use immediately.

Total cost: about $1
Total time: about 1h (plus dry time for glue)

Effort to Result Ratio: Very, very good!
